SNAKE BITE TREATMENT

A snakebite is a wound inflicted by a snake's fangs piercing the skin. Snakes, which are long, limbless, slithering reptiles, can be either venomous or nonvenomous. Venomous snakebites can inject toxins that are harmful to humans and potentially life-threatening. Snakes may bite either to capture prey or in self-defense. While some snakebites only cause minor injuries, others can be serious and require immediate medical attention.

Encountering a snake in the wild can be startling, especially if you're not expecting it. The sudden appearance of a snake moving quickly past your feet on a walking trail or slithering up a nearby tree can cause your heart rate to increase and prompt a reflexive jump or shriek. The fear of the potential dangers associated with snakebites can amplify this reaction, making the experience even more intense. Consequently, a snakebite can result in emotional trauma as well as a physical wound.

Are snakebites dangerous?

Snakebites are indeed dangerous, with varying levels of severity depending on the type of bite:

  • Dry bites: These occur when a snake bites without releasing any venom. They are most commonly seen with nonvenomous snakes but can also happen with venomous snakes.
  • Venomous bites: These bites are dangerous and can be life-threatening, occurring when a snake injects venom into the body. Venomous snakes can control the amount of venom they inject, and it’s estimated that 50% to 70% of venomous snake bites result in envenoming, where venom is injected and causes poisoning.

Venomous snakes voluntarily inject venom during a bite and can regulate how much venom they use. Even less serious bites should be treated as medical emergencies unless it’s certain that the bite is from a nonvenomous snake. Any delay in treatment following a venomous snake bite can lead to serious injury or, in the worst cases, death.

complications of a snakebite

Complications from a snakebite can be severe and include:

  • Infection: The wound may swell, become painful, change color, and leak pus or fluid.
  • Necrosis: The skin around the wound can turn black and die.
  • Sepsis: A severe immune response to infection can occur.
  • Septic shock: This can result from an infection, leading to very low blood pressure and organ failure.
  • Allergic reactions: Symptoms may include hives, difficulty breathing, and severe swelling.
  • Death: In severe cases, a snakebite can be fatal.

These complications are more common in regions with limited access to healthcare and treatment. Pain and swelling are typical long-lasting effects in the area where the bite occurred.
